Handbuilt flower bowl in white stoneware clay, decorated with layered reactive glazes.
When designing this piece, I wanted something calm, stylish, and ready to suit any interior.
In various shades of white and cream to add depth, and blue-grey crystal highlights on the inside petals, this would tick all the boxes. Being reactive glazes though, you never know until you open that second firing if this was achieved, so it was such a lovely moment when I unloaded the kiln! Seeing the light creating different colours as I moved around, I couldn't help but smile. I hope it brings as much joy to its new home one day!
Some background on the creation of the bowl:
All parts of this are done by hand - from making the plaster flower mould that I drape the clay over, to then rolling out and cutting the clay, and then of course the final forming, cleaning, and glazing thereof.
The "basic" steps that I take when glazing work is that I pick 3 to 4 different coloured reactive glazes which I then paint on, multiple layers of each shade in various thicknesses. After the glaze firing, which goes up to 1240°C, I have a piece where the glazes reacted when firing, giving that feeling of movement, and also unique patterns when it pooled, broke over texture etc. A special highlight in this bowl is the crystal blue-grey petal highlight - an extra little surprise to enjoy when you come close!
