"Potential"

In "Potential", we are celebrating the power we have within us all.

This rectangular stoneware plate is designed by combining layering reactive glazes with the sgraffito technique. 

When creating designs using sgraffito, the firm, "leatherhard" clay is painted in a contrasting liquid clay called underglaze. Once dry to touch, a metal tool is used to scratch through this coloured layer, revealing the design.

After the first kiln firing, the plate is then glazed by layering 3 layers of differently coloured reactive glaze. Because of the texture created by scratching through the clay layers at the building stage, the pooling of glaze in deeper areas now create the soft but clear design.

Whether you choose to display it or use in your everyday life (as most of my work, it's food, oven and microwave safe), it will always be a talking point!
