Sgraffito plate - Abstracts

Rectangular stoneware plate with abstract design created by using the sgraffito technique.

After rolling out the clay, the plate is formed by hand, ensuring a unique, organic feel. Covering the plate loosely to ensure it doesn't dry out too much, yet firms up sufficiently to handle, it is left until the next day. It is then painted in 2 layers of coloured clay, called underglaze - in this case, a lively turquoise. Once dry enough to touch without smearing, I use a thin metal tool to scratch through the underglaze to the clay, revealing the final design. 

The contrast between the white clay and underglaze is highlighted even more when the piece is seen and held in person - a dramatic, one-of-a-kind design. 

Whether you choose to display it or use in your everyday life (as most of my work, it's food, oven and microwave safe), it will always be a talking point!
