Head on a Platter
Shallow footed bowl in earthy creams and greens
Shallow footed bowl in earthy creams and greens
When designing this bowl, I wanted to create something calm and soothing.
Marrying smooth, clean lines of the shape with warm, calming creams was therefore ideal. Layering extra greens on top would keep it interesting and unique.
To enable me to keep to the clean lines of the design, during building texture was created by using highly grogged stoneware clay, which I first compressed and then scraped with a metal kidney (plate).
Glazing was done by layering 3 reactive glazes in different thicknesses. The resulting patterns are gorgeous. "Kind, but strong", if I could give an emotion to the designs created by the running dark specs, like the soft bark on an aging tree. And, as always, the magic of reactive glazes remain - warmer creams in soft lighting, whereas bright light brings out the green more.
Staining instead of glazing the bottom of the bowl ensures that the texture and "feel" of raw clay remain.
The result is a highly glossy interior which now contrasts beautifully with the raw, iron oxide stained exterior.
Lovely as a display, but also a great multitasker when needed. So, if you're like me, you probably wanted to know: It is indeed microwave and dishwasher safe!
