Golden Highlights Kintsugi flower plate
“Kintsugi: Embrace your imperfections and find happiness—the Japanese way.” — Tomas Navarro
In the Japanese art of Kintsugi, the artist mends broken ceramics by joining the areas of breakage with precious metals or adhesives mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. In modern ceramics, epoxy is often used to join the broken shards, before being covered in gold to not only highlight and embrace, but celebrate these scars.
On this plate, I used a bit of a mix of techniques - smoothing the occasional leaf edge where I felt it wasn't quite coming together, but instead of leaving it as is, I decided to highlight these with gold afterwards. So often people might look perfectly happy, but hiding the battles that was overcome to get there, is not needed. These battles should proudly be remembered, celebrated, because it made us who we are. It made us better.
