Handbuilt stoneware vessel in a highly grogged, black clay with a contrasting satin matt crawling glaze
One of the cornerstones of my new African Collection. Having grown up on a farm in South Africa, being close to nature has always been one of the things that makes me happy. In this collection, I am celebrating those elements: texture, contrast, strength. If you close your eyes and breathe in deeply, you can almost feel it. Africa in your living room.
Built over a couple of weeks by connecting thick, hand rolled coils, this is first compressed by hand and wooden paddles before refining the texture and shape with rasps and metal kidneys. After slow drying on the shelf and then bisque firing to 1000°C, the glazing process begins. Texture is again highlighted by dipping it in, and pouring over, a white crawling glaze. The final firing to 1220°C brings out the black in this stoneware clay completely, which contrasts beautifully with the satin matt white. A statement piece that will fit into any decorating scheme.
