Going back to my South African roots, the African collection has a special place in my heart. Working with the raw, groggy clay for hours has me back on the farm I grew up, with my sister and brothers, spending many happy hours in the sun. Climbing the mountain behind our house, swimming in the mud dam, having stained feet from running under the tree in mulberry season... Ah, how lucky we were! And my poor parents! 😅
But yes, my love for mud remains just as strong as ever. I close my eyes and I'm there, laughing. Also - and this is why this collection is always very organically shaped - I start by closing my eyes, holding the clay, imagining how it will grow into my rough design. And as I go along, being flexible to what looks and feels just right. Nature will not be forced into giving up its soul.
In this bowl, we have strong but simple lines. The texture of the black clay is what gives it depth, and keeping it raw, unglazed, this otherwise simple piece becomes quite dramatic!
I love how it looks displayed next to my hand carved, ostrich egg shell lamps (thanks to my amazing brother-in-law for those!), as would it when placed as a strong centrepiece on its own. Great with any colour scheme.
